Computational Modeling

All of our psychophysical work in the lab is strongly motivated and augmented by our computational modeling work. We apply the tools of statistical estimation theory, signal processing and optimal filtering to model the information content of images, to model "ideal observers" for performing various tasks and to model hypothetical mechanisms for coding visual information, for making perceptual inferences from that information and for controlling motor behavior. On one hand, the models provide hypotheses for psychophysical tests of perceptual and motor behavior. On the other hand, they provide tools for understanding the constraints that limit and guide human performance.
